Russian Collusion is REAL and You May Be Involved!

If you have followed the news for the past year, we hear about Russian Collusion almost every day. There is another kind of Russian collusion that doesn’t get much press, but there is plenty of hard evidence to prove that it is taking place, every day, and in homes and offices across the US.

In April 2018, the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT) published Alert TA18-106A titled Russian State-Sponsored Cyber Actors Targeting Network Infrastructure Devices. While this alert contains mostly technical information that only makes sense to computer security experts, there is one thing that this alert makes perfectly clear. State sponsored Russian hackers are targeting small business and home networks.

So what does this mean to you? Well, these hackers are looking for all the normal things; personal information, bank account details, email passwords, etc, but there is more to it. They also may be conscripting your computers and other devices in joining their “BOTNETS”.  Botnets are compromised computers and other network enabled devices that take instructions from central “command and control” servers to carry out various tasks. You’ve heard of “Fake News”? This is where a lot of fake news comes from. Compromised devices can be used to post Twitter and Facebook messages, send emails, and even participate in attacks against other computers and servers. US based small business and home networks and devices are particularly good targets for hackers because they tend to be more trusted than computers in third world countries, and this helps the hackers pull off their mischief a little easier.
